Peter Fraize's latest album is called "Organic Matter" and is an album that features a tight knit cast of players (Hammond organist, a guitarist, and a drummer) all playing with Fraize and his saxophone, on his original compositions that are of a wide variety of Jazz songs. "Soloman's House of Freaks" is an almost toe-tapping blues shuffle, in which the drums, organ, and guitar hold down the beat while the saxophone does the singing. "Brain's" is a unique jazzy number, with talented musical timing, that portrays a very modern take on using soulful sounds. "Fish (This Big)" is a song that incorporates a little bit of the jam-band sounds, in a song that is both jazz and rock like and really packs a punch. Overall, this is a distinctive album with its primary use of the Hammond organ as well as the saxophone to create songs that are an amalgam of both past and modern Jazz. The entertaining debut CD released from talented artist Jason Dolan is titled "Patiently." In it Dolan has created a collection of Folk/Rock songs that vary from mellow and reserved to excited and rock-like that all follow his vocals first, and then his guitar. The opener, "Cassie" is a spirited song in which Dolan is accompanied by drums as he, at times comically, laments over a failed relationship. "Shades of Grey" is a song in which he sings and talks quickly, yet plays his guitar slowly and soulfully, to create a juxtaposed folk song that is quite entertaining for the ears. "Isabel" is a more traditional folk song, with just Dolan and his guitar, as he shows off his deft vocal talents in a song with emotive lyrics. It is probably Dolan's background as humorous poet that is the reason why his brand of Folk/Rock orbits closely around his voice and words more-so than the average musician, yet this is what gives the album is undeniable uniqueness. If you enjoy vivaciously written folk music or would like to hear what an accomplished poet with a guitar might sound like, then listen to "Patiently" by Jason Dolan as you will find this album filled with new and refreshing compilations.

Plunky & Oneness struck gold with their CD release, "Plunky & Oneness 2012 Collectors' Box Set." This is a greatest hits compilation that takes cuts off their 12 full albums recorded between 1988 and 2008. The smartest move was putting the compilations onto 5 separate CDs, each genre-specific. The first half of the compilation is a lot more groovy and relaxed. For instance, "Forever In A Moment" (from the 'Love Songs' CD) is a great mood-setter with good, slow rhythms and expert saxophone. But my favorite part of the box-set has to be the 4th CD,'P Phunk.' These tracks have a lot of flavor, and vocals with feeling. "Got To Move Something" is an especially good example of the funky beats Plunky has to offer. Having this collector's CD box set is like having a well-oiled machine helping you pick the perfect mood. Whether you want urban groove, cool jazz, love songs, hard-core funk, or Afro world, Plunky & Oneness are here to help with "Plunky & Onesness 2012 Collectors' Box Set."

"Better Late than Never" by Ron Kemp (Rock/Acoustic Artist from Maryland(MD))

"Better Late than Never" is the newest release from the talented Folk/Rock musician Ron Kemp. The songs on this album for the most part just contain Kemp's warm and inviting voice and his sweet acoustic guitar which gives the production a nice clean and crisp clarity. On this album you can hear undertones of Folk, Bluegrass and Country in Kemp's acoustic styling. "Keepsake" is a slower moving love song in which we can hear Kemp's wonderfully talented guitar picking and strumming skills. On the song, "First-Sight Love," Kemp lets his voice get a little Country as he tells us another love story. "Crocabye Way" is a more fun and uplifting song in which Kemp lets his strumming get a little poppy. While the songs employ different sounds, the album throughout is relatively relaxed and calm. All in all, this entire album works if you are a fan of either love songs sung well or of acoustic Folk/Rock in the way of something like a James Taylor approach.

Better Late Than Never - It Started Here

Who would've thought that a kid from Congress Heights would end up writing folk rock songs? Well, that's who I am. Sure, I grew up on soul and the Jackson 5ive, et al. But, somewhere in the early 70s, I needed something different. Suddenly, I was hearing music that connected with my young soul, and it has stuck with me through the years. I'm talking Carly Simon, Eagles, James Taylor, Jackson Browne... I started writing lyrics while still in D.C. as a youngster. By the time I moved to Gaithersburg, I had become a pretty decent lyricist. The lyrics were still coming, and I was just stockpiling them. It would be a full twenty years!! before I'd start actually writing full songs.

Fast forward to 1996. I wrote the lyric to First-Sight Love as a spontaneous reaction to this brunette beauty I saw walk into a cafeteria where I ate daily. Poured it out in under 10 minutes. Ran to my room and grabbed my guitar. And, for the first time, I heard music in my head that fit my lyric!! And, on the spot, First-Sight Love was born. And, with the first one under my belt, songwriting became easy for me.

"Better Late Than Never" is a compilation of autobiographical snapshots, with the exception of "Crocabye Way" which is a whimsical journey to place of serenity. All in all, "Better Late Than Never" gives the listener not only a glimpse into the world of Ron Kemp but a keen look into the music of my soul. My influences range from Tom Petty to Jackson Browne to The Eagles to Bruce Springsteen. Sprinkle in a blend of Richie Havens and Darius Rucker, and you'll have a pretty good idea of where my sound derives from. Yet, it's uniquely my own. The melodies are rich, memorable, even hummable. Even at first listen. I borrowed from Tom Petty the notion that simplicity can be very powerful.

"500 Miles" by When Thunder Comes (Rock Artist from Washington DC)

A big part of the appeal of the New Wave movement back in the early 80's was the shift away from the bloated AOR sounds dominating airwaves to a simpler, '60's-oriented approach to songs and melody, albeit filtered through a new attitude - as well as a new sonic template, that would eventually shape much of the legacy of '80's rock. On "500 Miles," the latest CD from When Thunder Comes, New Wave is the order of the day in a 12-song collection that is, however, no less contemporary for all of its retro embellishments. On songs like "Good Ole Days" and the title track, "500 Miles," keenly balanced lead and harmony vocals are set off against tasteful synth incursions to flesh out rockers that are both catchy and provocative. Other tracks evoke different sounds of the New Wave era, like "See You In My Dreams," with its almost U2-like slice of ethereal pop, and "Endless Seas," reminiscent of classic Talking Heads. Throughout, though, the band plays with fire and precision, delivering up a set of infectious originals that mark When Thunder Comes' "500 Miles" CD as fitting in this era as it would have been 25 years ago.

"These People Aren't You" by Kid Goat (Rock Artist from Washington DC)

Tom Petty once proudly sang about the southern accent where he came from. Well, despite Kid Goat's eastern (DC & PA) origins, that accent imbues everything about Kid Goat's excellent "These People Aren't You" CD, an exploration of roots and alternative country-leaning rock that adds up to Americana at its finest. With Matt Aquiline and Belen Pifel trading off lead singing duties, Kid Goat strikes a nifty balance over 13 guitar-driven songs that alternately rock, swing, and sway. A jangle guitar underpins the hook-filled opener, "Must Be Blind," as the duo harmonize in the best southern tradition, while on "From You," Pifel's delicate country-tinged voice, which is reminiscent of Tift Merritt's, is the perfect vehicle for an memorable, pretty tune. Elsewhere, Aquiline's voice calls to mind the breakthrough BoDeans debut LP, with songs like "Pennsylvania" and "Working World" capturing the rawness at the heart of great rock 'n' roll. All told, "These People Aren't You" is a solid debut CD for Kid Goat; one that knocks down borders in the service of terrific Americana rock.

"Excellent Distraction" by Miles Stiebel (Jazz Artist from Washington D.C.(DC))

Notable band leader, Miles Stiebel, proves he is one of the most sought after musicians in his field with "Excellent Distraction." This album is a vibrant mix of emotionally charged jazz instrumentals, covers, and some of Stiebel's originals. Not only is he a well known band leader himself, but the disc was produced by Grammy nominated Bob Dawson and mastered by Grammy winner Ted Jensen (who has also worked with Norah Jones). Stiebel shows us what he does best on "Sir Duke," the first single off the record that strays from the typical jazz progressions and offers up a little bit of funk. "Ugly Beautiful" by Lachi (Pop Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

Pianist and songwriter Lachi, ornately blends the sounds of contemporary jazz with early '90's pop/rock with a wonderful result. Don't let the word jazz fool you, "Ugly Beautiful" is more of a pop record than anything else. The small hints of Diana Krall are very nice and fit well within Lachi's songwriting structure. One of those jazzy standouts is "Broke My Heart" which also highlights Lachi's talent for piano playing. The pop influences, a la Alanis Morrisette, come into play on the opening track "We Can Fly." The expression Lachi delivers when singing or speaking her lyrics and the tone of the guitars captures what was once a great time for music, the early '90's. If you are looking for something reminiscent of that period in music or just want to hear some good, female fronted piano rock, then "Ugly Beautiful" is a CD well worth hearing.

The guitar on "Te Revoir" is exquisitely fused with emotional spirit, with nice layering of instruments and percussion. One album highlight is the song "Tara," where the female vocals are smooth and silky with a nice bounce to the springy beat. In a change of genre, "My Latin Feeling" has a Latin-based piano melody with solid support on the guitar. "Unforgettable Soweto" is a delectable mixture of jazz merged together with African rhythms and is one jazz album well worth hearing.

"Warrior Angel" the latest release by L'illon is a wonderful endeavor and perfect for any pop music fan. L'illon fuses the musical worlds of pop and Latin music together very well, setting the scene for a very ethnic influenced album. Traces of the late Selena can be heard in songs such as "Tu Solo Tu (Only You)" and highlight some well played Spanish guitar riffs. The title track "Warrior Angel" pulls away from the Latin vibe with more of a world music instrumentation and pop sound. L'illon's artistic arrangements on the CD highlighting her Latin roots but do not let that fool you; this disc is perfect for any lover of female fronted pop music.

Singer Enid Holden's voice has a tone similar to Joni Mitchell with a little Edie Brickell thrown in. Mix in a well traveled ethnic quality and we get a refreshingly innovative sound. The players accompanying her are diverse and energetic, and the arrangements are complete. You'll hear an American- and Balkan-folk quality to the sound as well as various world influences. Overall, the album has a very "live" sound to it and is easy on the ears. HIghlights include the opener "Sizo Bonan," which presents a very upbeat vibe, and at the same time, relaxes you with its calming vocals. "Floated" is aptly titled. It is a classic lounge tune with a bit of Latin and world influence. Moreover, the vocals are very sultry. "Deserter" features the fine voice of husband-collaborator, Asim, and is an inspiring tune. If you enjoy the tonal quality of Joni Mitchell and the soothing vibe of Afro-jazz, you'll enjoy this one.
